Process

Background

Following the ING's success with their native mobile apps in the Netherlands, their next challenge was to create a web experience that could gather the same positive reviews.

My role

Being hired to work on the new web app, I started my first week supporting the creation of the internal pitch made for the C-level. Co-facilitating Google Design Sprints and supporting external user researchers, I developed a UI framework inspired by Google's Material Design, complete with seamless transitions and animations. Throughout the project I served as an ambassador for our team in the scrum of scrums and I also played a role in hiring new team members.

Personalizable dashboard or actionable to list

Inspired by many professional finance apps and wanting to utilize the larger screen real estate not available on the mobile apps and, business and IT leaders saw an opportunity to create a dashboard. I pushed back on this as the ING audience 1) are not professionals, it would overwhelm them and they have no need for advanced tools and 2) their data would't be interesting enough to fill a dashboard with. Rather a single column layout would 1) leverage recognition from the mobile apps and 2) create focus where we line up all important things to know in a single column, eventually opening up the possibility for Actionable Insights and relevant ads in the feed.

Outcome

Through incremental design iterations, involved collaboration with the engineering teams, and regular in-person user research focus groups we launched the first version of the web experience to positive reviews form stakeholders and customers.
